Scientific research is an important function of the Bay Commission. Over the years, our organization has conducted or sponsored significant research that has advanced our knowledge of environmental conditions within the Bay and influenced the adoption of new management policies, strategies, and actions. Several of these studies have resulted in scientific breakthroughs with significant local, statewide and, in some cases, nationwide implications.
The following section highlights key accomplishments of the scientific research efforts. Many of the study reports can be downloaded from our Library.

Aerial deposition study
SUMMARY
1999. An assessment of total annual load of airborne toxic contaminants to Santa Monica Bay. The study found that aerial deposition is a significant contributor to the overall pollutant load in the Bay.

A health effects study of swimmers
PURPOSE
SUMMARY
1995. The first large-scale epidemiologic study in the nation to investigate and provide a linkage between increased illnesses in swimmers and surfers and proximity to areas with contaminated runoff.
