PUBLIC EDUCATION is a vital component of our efforts to restore and protect the Bay. Education serves as a critical step in raising awareness about pollution and changing perceptions and habits. Through continued diligence, public education programs can help to reduce pollution to the Bay.

In support of the Bay Restoration Plan's public education goals, the SMBRC administers two key education and outreach programs: 1) the Public Involvement and Education (PIE) Program and 2) the Boater Education Program (BEP). In addition, we maintain this website, produce newsletters and other documents, and support a variety of watershed-based educational efforts. An Interactive Information System for Santa Monica Bay

PURPOSE

SUMMARY
USC Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies
Funding: $347,600
Monitoring in Santa Monica Bay has been extensive and in most regards very well done. The main problem is that the uncoordinated monitoring programs in the Bay provide only fragmentary and incomplete information about the Bay's environment. --Assessment of Monitoring and Data Management Needs in Santa Monica Bay.
With funds made available through the SMBRP Proposition 12 grant program, USC's Wrigley Institute for Environmental Studies is developing an Internet-based Interactive Information System to address this problem. The system will give scientists, resource managers, students, and the general public centralized access to a variety of historical and current water quality monitoring data, remote sensing data, and on-going research. The system will be part of the Santa Monica Bay website and will help the Project increase awareness and interest in the Bay's health.

Santa Monica Pier Aquarium

PURPOSE

SUMMARY
Heal the Bay
Funding: $284,000
Spanning approximately two years, Heal the Bay will use grant funds to continue and expand its outreach efforts at the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium. The Aquarium is host to various school groups, community members and the general public who want to learn more about the Bay and its resources. The facility has touch tanks, lectures and a variety of hands-on activities to engage visitors.
During this grant period, Heal the Bay will explore various permanent mechanisms/sources of funding such that the facility becomes self-sufficient.
