SMBRC Governing Board elections - Dec 13th, 2007 - Tuesday, November 06, 2007

SMBRC Governing Board elections will be held at the December 13 meeting. The 70+ member Bay Watershed Council will first elect nine (9) of its members to the Governing Board, then the Governing Board will convene to elect its chair and up to six vice-chairs.

Please see the attached memo for more information, including which entities are on the Bay Watershed Council and, thus, eligible to attend and vote. Each member of the BWC should designate a representative for the meeting. As always, SMBRC meetings are open to the public.

Nominations (including self nominations) must be received in writing by November 14. An e-mail suffices as a written nomination. Otherwise, nominations will be accepted in person at the meeting on December 13.

All questions and nominations should be directed to Scott Valor.

Updated information, including the December 13 agenda, will be available on our website

Program Assistant Position - Tuesday, November 06, 2007

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation (SMBRF) is seeking a talented, highly motivated Program Assistant to support its environmental outreach and pollution prevention program for Southern California watercraft users. The assistant will work with program staff in coordinating public education and outreach efforts, developing educational program design and strategy, and implementing a set of integrated public education programs on non-point source pollution issues. The assistant will also be providing administrative support on various projects. This is a part time position and must commit to at least 25 hrs/wk. Compensation is $12.00 to $18.00 per hour, depending on experience and class standing.

Job Announcement - Graduate Student Assistant - Monday, September 24, 2007

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission (SMBRC) is seeking a graduate student assistant between October 2007 and June 2008 to support its habitat protection and restoration, and environmental research and monitoring activities. By working for the Commission, selected candidates will be exposed to the development and implementation of water quality improvement and habitat restoration policies and programs. The candidate will also have the opportunity to work and interact with scientists from various research institutions, agencies, and organizations on research and monitoring projects that fulfill information need for addressing important environmental issues. More specifically, selected candidates will work directly with Commission staff on several on-going projects.

RFP - Data Gap Analysis - Wednesday, August 08, 2007

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission (SMBRC) invites proposals from qualified researchers, nonprofits, professional consulting firms and others for assistance in conducting data gap analysis on habitats and resources in Santa Monica Bay. The objective of this project is to assist the Marine Protected Areas Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC) of the SMBRC to conduct the following:

Conduct existing literature review to update the existing Santa Monica Bay living resources inventory. From the updated inventory, compile and summarize existing data that are relevant to MPA design.

Evaluate data collected under existing monitoring protocols used throughout the Bay to determine their applicability in the MLPA process.

Review available gap analyses of federal and state resource protection regulations and conduct an analysis of local resource protection regulations to identify gaps.

Assist the MTAC to identify information gaps and study needs and develop future research plans.

RFP - Assessment of Subtidal Rocky Reef Resources in Santa Monica Bay - Wednesday, June 20, 2007

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Commission (SMBRC) invites proposals from qualified researchers, nonprofits, professional consulting firms, and others for assistance in assessing subtidal rocky reef resources in Santa Monica Bay. The objective of this project is to assist the Marine Protected Areas Technical Advisory Committee (MTAC) of the SMBRC to conduct the following:

Determine the current status of algal, invertebrate, and fish communities throughout the Bay within the subtidal rocky reef habitat (< 27.5 meter)

Provide baseline information on condition of subtidal rocky reef habitat to contribute to the California Marine Life Protection Act (MLPA) process in southern California

Establish a monitoring program to track changes over time in the condition of subtidal rocky reef habitat throughout the Bay in accordance with recommendations of the Santa Monica Bay Comprehensive Monitoring Program

Job Posting - Environmental Restoration Project Manager - Monday, June 11, 2007

The Project Manager plays an active role in overseeing contracts and grant agreements for restoration and research projects managed by the Foundation. This includes working with the Bay Restoration Commission’s Grant Manager and Foundation grantees and contractors to develop work scopes, budgets and deliverables, track progress, review periodic and final reports, and process invoices. The Foundation offers a casual work atmosphere and creative work environment.

Call for Volunteers! - Tuesday, May 15, 2007

The Santa Monica Bay Restoration Foundation is seeking summer volunteers to support a first-of-its-kind study on recreational boating and environmental quality in Marina del Rey.

Volunteers will interview boaters about their boating habits, knowledge, attitudes, perceptions, and their use of sewage pump-out stations located within the marina.

Volunteers will also get to:

  • kayak around the marina to collect data on recreational vessels; and
  • participate in a series of educational field trips

We seek volunteers who can commit to at least two weekends per month and between 6-12 hours per weekend starting at the end of May and lasting until the end of the summer boating season.
