AS WE ENTER THE 21st CENTURY, a multitude of challenges continues to face Santa Monica Bay and its watershed. These challenges include how best to:
  • Balance the needs of a growing population with resource protection and restoration
  • Restore the watershed's many degraded habitats and living resources (e.g., wetland, lagoon, terrestrial, riparian, intertidal, and marine)
  • Preserve open space, ensure habitat linkages, and implement environmentally friendly land use policies.
  • Minimize and/or eliminate invasive species while improving the state of the watershed's threatened and endangered species
  • Reduce contaminated urban runoff and improve water quality both throughout the watershed and in the Bay itself
  • Coordinate and implement a comprehensive monitoring program to more effectively assess the condition of the Bay.
  • Protect public health from risks associated with eating Bay seafood and swimming in the Bay.
  • Educate Los Angeles' diverse audiences about the importance of pollution prevention and environmental protection/restoration.
How best to address these challenges is detailed more specifically in Problems & Solutions. Continued vigilance and action are crucial if we are to fully implement the Bay Restoration Plan and achieve its goals of a clean and healthy Santa Monica Bay.
